BVS Stumpage Index
Stumpage is the price charged by a timber owner to a log buyer for the right to harvest their timber. This
is typically expressed in terms of dollars per thousand board feet ($/mbf). A board foot is a one square foot board,
one inch thick, and a typical 2,000 square foot home contains about 25 mbf of framing lumber and other wood products.
BVS has created a Stumpage Index to assist our clients in making land management
decisions. This index is calculated based on a mixture of Sierra and coastal California zones, and reflects the typical tractor-based
logging operations developed by BVS for our non-industrial clients. Actual stumpage prices will vary, but the trends
depict real timber market conditions.
